چکیده

This paper investigates calling melodies produced by 21 Standard German native speakers on a discourse completion task across two contexts: (i) routine context—calling a child from afar to come in for dinner; (ii) urgent context—calling a child from afar for a chastising. The intent of this investigation is to bring attention to other calling melodies found in German beside the vocative chant and to give an insight to their acoustic profile. Three major melodies were identified in the two contexts: vocative chant (100% of routine context productions), urgent call (100% of male urgent context productions, 52.2% female productions), and stern call (47.8% female urgent context productions). A subsequent quantitative analysis was carried out on these calls across these parameters: (i) tonal scaling at tonal landmarks; (ii) proportional alignment of selected tonal landmarks with respect to the stressed or last vowel; and (iii) amplitude (integral and RMS) and (iv) duration of the stressed vowel, stressed syllable, and word. The resulting data were analyzed using a linear mixed model approach. The results point to significant differences in the contours produced in the aforementioned parameters. We also proposed a phonological description of the contours in the framework of Autosegmental-Metrical Phonology.

The phonetics and phonology of the Polish vocative chant

The Polish vocative chant is a melody used, as in other languages, to call someone for a routine reason. Three repetitions of 12 Polish names (1-4 syllables long, 3 names per syllable count) were elicited from 16 speakers using a Discourse Completion Task. The results, based on data from 11 speakers (6 female), showed that the contour ends in a small rise (not a plateau as in other languages), ...

Comparing Offertory Melodies of Five Medieval Christian Chant Traditions

In this study, we compare the melodies of five medieval chant traditions: Gregorian, Old Roman, Milanese, Beneventan, and Mozarabic. We present a newly created dataset containing several hundreds of offertory melodies, which are the longest and most complex within the total body of chant melodies. For each tradition, we train ngram language models on a representation of the chants as sequence o...

A 2-year-old male German shepherd dog was admitted with non-weight bearing lameness and massive swelling of the left hind limb. Clostridium perfringens type A with alpha toxin was diagnosed as a pathogenic agent. Based on ...

Communication Strategies Revisited: Looking beyond Interactional and Psycholinguistic Perspectives

Second language (L2) communication strategies (CSs) have traditionally been dealt with through either interactional or psychological perspectives. However, this paper is a critical attempt to question the status of the particular kinds of psycholinguistic and interactional approaches that currently dominate the field of second language acquisition (SLA). In this way, it expands the significance...
